SpamAssassin
Anti-Spam Email Protection
As a service to our customers, Fargo Digital uses SpamAssassin anti-spam
email protection, a sophisticated spam filtering software that marks spam (unsolicitated bulk email) on the server
prior to its arrival in your computer. Email with the subject header marked ***SPAM*** identifies email evaluated
as spam by SpamAssassin.
If you see the ***SPAM*** marking in the headers of your email, this means that Fargo Digital is using SpamAssassin
on the server to detect spam and clearly mark it for you so you can filter it more easily, should you wish to.
Each incoming email is scanned for signs that it may be spam, and if it is determined that it's likely to be spam,
the email is marked ***SPAM*** to help you decide whether to delete or keep it.
Can I turn SpamAssassin off?
Yes, you can request that SpamAssassin be turned off. Sometimes SpamAssassin will get a "false positive",
resulting in emails marked ***SPAM*** that are not actually spam. Since spammers don't highlight the fact that
their bulk email is spam, SpamAssassin has to work it out — and it's not always perfect. If you decide you don't
want your email filtered by SpamAssassin, please » Contact Fargo Digital
« to turn SpamAssassin off.
SpamAssassin is a mature, widely-deployed open source software project of the Apache Software Foundation designed
to filter spam email from legitimate email. SpamAssassin runs on the server, and identifies spam before it reaches
your mailbox. It is used by nearly every known email delivery system.
SpamAssassin uses a diverse range of tests, including header and text analysis, Bayesian filtering, DNS blocklists,
and collaborative filtering databases, to identify unsolicited bulk email, more commonly known as spam. These tests
are applied to email headers and content to classify email using advanced statistical methods.
Advantages
SpamAssassin's practical multi-technique approach, modularity,
and extensibility give it an advantage over other anti-spam systems. SpamAssassin is widely used in all aspects
of email management. It is used in both email clients and servers, and on many different operating systems, filtering
incoming as well as outgoing email. These installations include service providers, businesses, not-for-profit and
educational organizations, and end-user systems.
SpamAssassin uses a modular architecture that enhances the strengths of other technologies against spam. SpamAssassin
is designed for easy integration into virtually any email system. SpamAssassin also forms the basis for numerous
commercial anti-spam products available on the software market today.
How it works
SpamAssassin includes a flexible and powerful set of Perl programs.
Unlike older spam filtering approaches, SpamAssassin uses the combined score from multiple types of checks to determine
if a given email message is spam. Even though any one of these individual tests might mis-identify spam, their
combined capabilities are difficult to fool. This combination of tests makes it very difficult for spammers to
sneak junk email through SpamAssassin.
Easy Configuration
SpamAssassin requires very little configuration. You do not need to continually update it with details of your
mail accounts, mailing list memberships, etc. Once classified, site and user-specific policies are automatically
applied against spam. Policies can be applied on mail servers and in the user's own mail user-agent application.
SpamAssassin does not filter email viruses — just
spam
SpamAssassin is designed to identify spam, not block viruses.
The process of scanning for viruses is quite different, and requires software designed specifically to identify
viruses. Fargo Digital uses ClamAV anti-virus software in conjuction with SpamAssassin to screen all email for
viruses.
About the Apache Software Foundation
SpamAssassin is an Apache Software Foundation project and is
released under the Apache License. The Apache Software Foundation provides organizational, legal, and financial
support for a broad range of open source software projects. As a US 501(c)(3) public charity, the Foundation provides
an established framework for contributions of both intellectual property and funding for the support of open source
software development. Through a collaborative and meritocratic development process, Apache projects deliver enterprise-grade,
freely available software products for the public benefit, attracting large communities of users and enabling future
innovation, both commercial and individual, through its pragmatic Apache License. |
